More than 600 fires in just a few days: Serbia under fire

During a visit to the Deliblato Sands with Serbian Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Ivica Dačić, he said that there had been as many as 140 fires a day in recent days, adding that they had been quickly brought under control.

“We also had a fire on Fruška Gora. We are now close to extinguishing fires in Vladičin Han and the Bor District. The fire in the Stolovi area remains serious, and efforts are underway to bring it under control and contain it, preventing it from spreading into the coniferous forest complex,” Čaušić said.

According to him, a Kamov helicopter was also deployed on Mount Stolovi near the village of Šošanica, close to Kraljevo, and did an excellent job today. More than 70 members of the Emergency Situations Sector are also on the ground, along with volunteer firefighters and personnel from “Srbijašume”. If this trend continues, he said, that fire should also be brought under control very soon.

“The Helicopter Unit has been of great help to us. As of today, they have made 511 sorties and dropped 1,466 tons of water,” Čaušić said.

He added that he hoped lives would be protected in the Deliblato Sands, along with nearby settlements, and that the blaze would ultimately be brought under control.
