As part of the “Employment Programme for the Most Successful Graduates of Medical Faculties and Secondary Medical Schools,” 100 of the top-performing medical graduates in Serbia have received employment contracts for positions at healthcare institutions.
In addition, 380 of the top-performing nurses and medical technicians from secondary medical schools also received employment contracts today for positions at healthcare institutions across Serbia.
The contracts were presented during a ceremony at the Palace of Serbia by Zlatibor Lončar, the outgoing Minister of Health, who noted that the Ministry of Health launched the programme in 2018 as a result of a responsible policy that recognized the importance of healthcare.
“People can think whatever they want, but there is only one reason we have reached this stage, and that is responsible policymaking that recognized the importance of healthcare. One man with a vision saw all of this, ensured the economic conditions necessary to finance, organize and carry out the programme.
“What I will ask of you is that, when you complete your specializations and doctoral studies, you never again allow a situation in which specialization opportunities are not awarded, people are not hired through open recruitment competitions but through other means, or the best people, like you, are forced to go abroad because their own country fails to recognize their abilities and offer them employment,” Lončar said.
He emphasized that, by presenting the contracts, the state wanted to send a message that the health of Serbia’s citizens would be entrusted to the best doctors. He also stressed that Serbia recognizes the hard work and dedication demonstrated by those who excel during their education.
He added that he was confident those who received employment contracts today were accustomed to studying and learning, and that continuing their professional development would therefore not be difficult for them.
“You will have the state supporting you, financing both your professional development in Serbia and your further training abroad, wherever you believe it is necessary, provided that you return and apply your knowledge to the benefit of our citizens,” Lončar said.
He emphasized that life would not be easy for the newly employed doctors and medical staff, as medicine requires considerable personal sacrifice. However, he was confident that their primary motivation was to help patients.
“That is our mission, and that is what we must always keep in mind: helping people. Never forget that. The only thing the state asks of you is to help people and enable future generations to have the same opportunities you have had. Nobody should have to pay money to secure a job, nor should anyone have to pay or rely on personal connections to obtain a specialization or any other opportunity,” Lončar stressed.

He said that the state would continue investing in healthcare, that salaries in the sector would continue to rise, and that efforts to renovate existing healthcare facilities and build new ones would also continue.
