Brnabić: We will propose an amendment that allows the takeover of NIS
Serbia’s Speaker of the National Assembly, Ana Brnabić, stated that an amendment to the Budget Law will be proposed in the Serbian Parliament, which will outline the circumstances under which Serbia would have to take over NIS.
Brnabić said that she personally would not support the nationalization of NIS, but that nothing must endanger the standard of living, quality of life of citizens, or the economy.
“I would not support nationalization precisely because I am economically liberal. And again, I am proud to be a member of SNS, because SNS, as a center-right party in this sense, is fully aligned with such a policy. I believe nationalization is not the right way because it opens Pandora’s box. Once nationalization happens, it becomes easier each time to justify it for multiple interests,” Brnabić told Euronews.
She added that she hopes partners from the Russian Federation will keep this in mind, because so far it seems they have not.
“We must protect, and we will protect, our citizens and our national interests. We offered them, as a minority partner, to be the first to negotiate with them on this. We offered to participate in those discussions. Thanks to President Aleksandar Vučić and his personal credibility and connections, we practically delayed the enforcement of those sanctions to allow more time to find a solution,” Brnabić stated.
She emphasized that, although she is not in favor of nationalization, she will always support protecting Serbia’s national interests, and they will be protected.
“Will these be difficult decisions? Yes. And credit to President Vučić for personally informing citizens every time about what is happening, the situation, the good and bad news. We will solve the problem one way or another,” Brnabić said.
When asked what citizens should expect, whether electricity or fuel would run out, Brnabić replied that citizens will certainly not suffer in any way.
“After all, today is the 47th day that we have not imported a single liter of oil through JANAF, and everything is still stable, everything still works. We do not even have psychological panic,” Brnabić emphasized.
Regarding whether NIS employees will receive salaries, she replied that it is a private, not a state, company.
