Serbia to introduce biometric IDs

Serbian citizens will soon be issued with new ID cards, which will cost some EUR 12 each. The Official Gazette says in its latest edition that the document, complete with biometric data, will be made of PVC in the shape of a credit card, with blue as the dominant color, and new protective elements. Serbia to introduce biometric IDs The Serbian coat of arms, a distinctive cross with four Serbian Cyrillic "s" letters in each corner, will be printed as a hologram. The new IDs were first planned to be issued in January last year. The date was postponed, while holders of the previous version of valid personal identification documents will be able to use them through July 2011. The information on the front of the new documents will be written in Serbian Cyrillic and in English, and will contain the holder's photograph, name, last name, date of birth, gender, the card's serial number, expiry date, and the MUP department that issued it. Ethnic minorities will have their names and last names written in their own language and alphabet, as well as in Serbian. Other data will be printed in reverse order, in Serbian first, and then in the holder's native language. The back side of the new ID cards will contain the following: JMBG—a Serbian equivalent of social security number, digital finger print image, and chip containing biometric data, which will be inserted with the holder's permission. The biometric data can be collected either from a digital photograph, or by scanning the existing photo that is a part of the ID card, the Official Gazette said.
