A deadline for deciding Kosovo's future will be up for discussion as high U.S. and Russian officials meet next week. U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Defense Secretary Robert Gates will hold talks next week in Moscow, a U.S. official said Friday. U.S. – Russia talks face deadlines The United States has insisted that negotiations on Kosovo wrap up by Dec. 10, while Russia announced this year that it would suspend participation in the Conventional Forces in Europe treaty on Dec. 12. "We are well aware of the calendar and well aware that there are some tough issues coming up in December," Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Fried said in briefing reporters on the trip. Rice and Gates will travel to Moscow on October 12 for two days of talks with Russian officials at a time of rising tensions on a number of issues. On Kosovo, Fried made clear that the United States will "resist any delay beyond the expiration of current talks involving the United States, Russia and European countries," the AP reported. "After Dec. 10, the negotiating mandate runs out and we will have decisions, one way or another, at hand," Fried said. "If you've moved past the negotiating mandate, there's no point in more negotiations. After all, the issues are known." Russia has said that talks should continue if negotiators do not have a deal by Dec. 10.
