GNJILANE -- A Kosovo Albanian from the village of Poneš near Gnjilane was killed and his brother wounded when a Serb shot them Friday, Kosovo police’s Shaban Azizi says.
The suspect is currently on the run.
The incident happened in the forest near the village of Pones at 13:00 CET, Azizi stated, adding that the search for the suspect was under way and that his identity was known to the police.
Azizi could not say who owned the forest where the murder had occurred.
Poneš residents told Tanjug on Friday that the Serb shot at the two Albanians when he caught them stealing timber.
A special unit of the police has surrounded Poneš, where around 700 Serbs reside, and has been searching the houses.
Serb Momčilo Savić was arrested for helping the suspect.
The local Serbs fear that Albanians will retaliate against them and have therefore requested from the Kosovo police to protect them.
They also called on the police to investigate the case in accordance with the law.
RTS has reported that the situation in the village was tense but calm.
