Milan Markovic has said that in May, "there will be an answer to the question whether Serbia is ready to reform its political system". The Serbian parliament is supposed to vote soon on political party laws and the election of deputies in local assemblies, which will be some kind of a test, and after this we will know if we are ready to change the way in which the MPs and the president of the Republic is elected, the minister of state management and local self government said in an interview for daily Blic. Minister on political system reform "We will also know whether it will be possible to regulate in a different way the financing of parties and to set up a new body that will replace the Electoral Commission (RIK)," he said. According to Markovic, the law on political parties will tighten the conditions for the registration of those parties, which will give us an answer to the question what parties are really backed by the citizens. However, the crucial law is the one that refers to the election of deputies, and whether or not the reform will be successful depends on the adoption of this document, Markovic added. He said that the law was important since it envisaged a direct election of the people's representatives in local assemblies, which would exclude the parties as being a mediator that determined who would sit in parliament.
