Starting today, military service is no longer obligatory in the neighboring Croatia. At the start of a year that Zagreb hopes will see it receive invitation to join NATO, a parliament decision to end the compulsory army service took effect. Croatia ends compulsory army service Only volunteers will from now on join the professionalized military, for the first time including women. The Croatian Ministry of Defense sources say they expect to have more applications than there are vacancies in the new army. In case of a direct threat of war, the country will however reverse to call-ups.
