Ruecker did not provide many details, but said that the office will serve to bring Kosovo and the EU closer, “bearing in mind Kosovo’s desire to one day take part in the European integrations.”

Ruecker returned to Priština from his Friday Vienna meeting with UN special Kosovo envoy Martti Ahtisaari.

The UNMIK chief said he believed there would be no further delays, and that Ahtisaari will present his Kosovo status proposal at the end of January 2007.

Spanish Secretary of State for European Affairs Alberto Navarro says his country favors immediate continuation of the EU stabilization and association talks with Serbia, conditioning the signing of the agreement on Belgrade’s full cooperation with the Hague tribunal.

“We support the Italian proposal, especially as it is also backed by Austria, Slovenia, Greece, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria. We will try to have this issue on the agenda at the next ministerial meeting, although there is strong from the UK and the Scandinavian countries”, Navarro said in an interview with Novosti.

He also said Kosovo’s independence would be contrary to EU trends, which aim at creating multiethnic states. Navarro concluded that the Spanish experiences provide for a good example on how to solve the Kosovo problem.
