Tsipras criticized for alliance with right wing party

"I called him a second time to ask why he remains in coalition with this strange, far right party," Schulz, a German Social Democrat, told the French Radio Inter.

Schultz said that Tsipras "replied with the claims that sound smart, but are, when one thinks about it, somewhat bizarre."

Tsipras' party Syriza on Sunday won 35 percent of the vote, while the Independent Greeks received only four percent.

Unlike Syriza, the Independent Greeks, with whom he was already in a coalition before elections, are opposed to Greece's membership in the EU and its leaders often make xenophobic and even anti-Semitic statements.

Schultz said he "admires Tsipras for his political skill, but does not understand at all the continued cooperation with the extreme right."
