TOKYO - President of the UN General Assembly, Vuk Jeremic, spoke today at commemoration of the world's first atomic bomb hitting civilian target in Hiroshima. The international community must not give up on ridding the world of nuclear weapons, Jeremic told Kyodo News on the eve of Hiroshima commemoration. Jeremic attends Hiroshima commemoration The attraction of states to nuclear armament is a vicious circle, allowing for only either a completely nuclear world or a completely nuclear-free one, Jeremic said. Complete nuclear disarmament cannot happen overnight, but that does not mean we should give up this valiant task, Jeremic said, stressing that it is only through the multilateral engagement of the entire international community that one can prevent dissemination of nuclear technology that can be used to produce atomic weapons. Hiroshima serves as a reminder as to how the whole world can suffer if the efforts to contain and ultimately, in my opinion, get the world rid of nuclear weapons are not followed through with vigilance and zeal, he said. Jeremic met with Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo to discuss a range of international topics, from a reform of the UN Security Council to better cooperation between Japan and Serbia. Jeremic and Abe focused in particular on the course of the UN Security Council reform, reviewed the progress in creating the global goals of sustainable development and discussed the new development strategies of the UN for after 2015. Abe confirmed his willingness to visit Serbia to Jeremic and to get involved in intensifying the cooperation between the two countries. Tanjug Tanjug
