Egyptian authorities decided not to allow members eight U.S. non-governmental organizations to continue with their activities in the country. Among these organizations is the Carter Center, led by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. Egypt bans work of eight American NGOs The Egyptian Ministry of Social said in a statement that the work of American organizations was not approved because its activities "violate the sovereignty" of Egypt. No further explanation was given. The Carter Center said it had not been formally notified of the decision of the Egyptian authorities. Observers from this NGO were allowed to monitor parliamentary elections which were held in several stages, from November to February. The decision to ban the work of American non-governmental organizations was issued a month before presidential elections, the first to be held after the ouster of former President Hosni Mubarak. The Egyptian Ministry of Social said in a statement that the work of American organizations was not approved because its activities "violate the sovereignty" of Egypt.

No further explanation was given.

The Carter Center said it had not been formally notified of the decision of the Egyptian authorities. Observers from this NGO were allowed to monitor parliamentary elections which were held in several stages, from November to February.
