Two more people have been plucked alive from the rubble in Haiti, just hours before the country declared its earthquake search and rescue phase over. The UN says 132 survivors have so far been rescued by international teams – the latest a 22-year-old man and an 84-year-old woman. Haiti says search and rescue phase “over” Up to 200,000 people are thought to have been killed, although Haitian authorities currently give a death toll of 111,500. As NGOs continue to help to get humanitarian aid to those in need, there are signs that daily life in some areas is beginning to resume. Some banks and petrol stations have reopened and agencies that handle money transfers from overseas report brisk business. Some shops have also reopened, although they are only selling what supplies they had before the devastating quake. “Everything was on the floor,” said one supermarket owner. “All the products fell down. We’ve taken charge again, though. We cleaned everything up and reorganised the market. We hope that everything will continue and that’ll we’ll get merchandise to sell.”
