Police say the bombers who struck at two hotels in the Indonesian capital Jakarta had checked in as guests. That’s how they managed to breach security. Explosions ripped through the Ritz Carlton and Marriot hotels at breakfast time yesterday killing at least 8. UN condemns Indonesia blasts Police say they have identified the bombers from the remains they recovered. But which network of Islamic groups they belonged to is unclear. Suspicion falls on the South East Asian Islamist group Jemaah Islamiyah and last night the United Nations Security Council condemned the attacks. Council members said they were confident the planners of the bombings would be brought to justice. Indonesia has arrested many Muslim militants especially since the Bali bombings in 2002 which killed more than 200. The country’s newspapers speculated that the Jakarta attacks were symbolic and Indonesia might be entering a new era of terrorism. This is a blow to the people of Indonesia who recently had enjoyed greater security and a healthier economy. At least 18 foreigners were among the dead and injured. A New Zealander was confirmed dead and at least 8 Americans sustained injury.
