A man accused of imprisoning his daughter for 24 years, and fathering seven children by her, is standing trial in Austria. Josef Fritzl denied a charge of murdering one of them – a newborn boy -who died in the underground cellar at Amstetten in 1996. Police say Fritzl lured his daughter Elisabeth into the cellar of his apartment block in 1984. They claim that by the time details emerged in April last year, the children had never seen daylight, and had never had any formal education. Prosecutors say Elisabeth was abused and kept imprisoned in the sound-proofed underground bunker with three of her children. Three others lived with Fritzl and his wife Rosemarie.
