Voting for the New7Wonders of Nature competition ended at midnight, with Serbia’s candidate, Djavolja Varos, ahead in its category. The Planinka travel agency from Kursumlija, which nominated Djavolja Varos—Devil’s Town in English—said that they were happy with the results and that the Serbian nomination had received more votes than the entire Serbian population put together. Serbian natural wonder finishes first in category 441 candidates from all over the world took part in the second round of voting. According to figures from the competition organizers, the Bernard Webber agency in Switzerland, over a billion votes came from 220 countries from all over the world. In the first round of voting, Djavolja Varos took first place in Europe and eleventh in the world, out of 170 candidates. In the second round, when the results were expressed according to category, it finished first in the“Rock Formations, Caves, Valleys“ category. Tourism Development Sector Director Radovan Tanaskovic said that “Planinka is very pleased with Djavolja Varos’s results. It’s the result of a serious campaign run by this travel agency, as we’re in first place in our category,“ said Tanaskovic. “We estimate that Djavolju Varos received many more votes than the number of Serbian citizens in the diaspora. Besides propaganda that was fairly focused, the voting system itself meant that our candidate received votes from Russia, China, India and other big countries, which is why the Serbian candidate finished first at world level,“ he explained. At the same time, he said that the final results of the second round of voting would be announced tomorrow, with 11 candidates being selected from each of the seven categories. Of these 77 candidates, the agency’s panel of experts will select 28 candidates to go into the third round, and these results will be officially published on July 21, at 12:07 CET. Djavolju Varos is a group of earth pyramids in the Radan Mountains in southern Serbia, near the town of Kursumlija, made up of two rare phenomena: 202 attractive earth figures, formed as a result of soil erosion reaching up to 15 meters in height, and two extremely rare sources of highly mineralized water. There are only seven such sources throughout the world. What makes this natural wonder special is that both phenomena are located in the same place. Djavolja Varos was nominated for the New7Wonders of Nature competition two years ago, with the support of the Serbian Tourist Organization and the Diaspora Ministry. According to Planinka, since its nomination, Djavolja Varos has seen visitor numbers rocket, with over 80,000 tourists from home and abroad visiting in the last two years. Snažno nevreme stiže u Srbiju

U većem delu Srbije će danas pre podne biti pretežno sunčano, toplo, suvo i vetrovito, uz olujnu košavu u Beogradu, na jugu Banata, u Pomoravlju i donjem Podunavlju, a već u poslepodnevnim satima biće kratkotrajne kiše ili pljuskova.
