Slovak soldiers caught smuggling from Kosovo

Last week, the luggage of the Slovak soldiers, who were taken back home by truck, was opened at the Hungarian border crossing, where 450 litres of alcoholic beverages and 321 cartons of cigarettes were found.

The group of 132 soldiers from the Czech-Slovakian battalion returned home by airplane a day later, and it still has not been confirmed who within the group was behind the smuggling activity.

“Slovak Military Chief-of-Staff Lubomir Bulik said measures will be taken to prohibit this from happening again. The case will be investigated by a special commission of the military council,” an official of the Slovak military said.

Since March 2002, Slovakia has had 135 soldiers participating in the Kosovo peacekeeping mission at a base in Šajkovac.
