Children at risk of accidental poisoning

Most people leave cleaning agents below the sink or on the bathroom floor. Grandparents tend to keep their medicines on the table or on shelves within easy reach of inquisitive children.

Children who have swallowed dangerous substances are immediately transferred into the Mother and Child Health Care Institute. Vladimir Vukomanović, pediatrician with the Institute, said, “Each day we see a case of child poisoning. Light cases of drug poisoning constitute 70 percent of overall child poisonings. Sixty percent of poisoned children are treated in the daily health care centre and are rarely admitted for further care. Children often consume drugs for treating heart diseases and high blood pressure, which can seriously damage their general health”.

Vukamonović added that parents must immediately call emergency services if their child take in any unsupervised drug or taste household cleaning product even if no symptoms are visible.
