A wildfire broke out on Thursday in the woods on the island of Brac in Croatia, its smoke spreading towards Split and the island of Hvar, said reports. Shortly before noon, another fire started near the town of Sinj on Mt. Kamesnica, the Croatian State Administration for Protection and Rescue announced. Fires sweep through Croatia's coastal region The fire on Brac broke out on Thursday afternoon in the thick pine woods, so far destroying 2,300 hectares. 170 firefighters were working to put the blaze under control as some 200 tourists and 30 locals were evacuated. Additional fire brigades from Split and Zadar with vehicles and water tanks, as well as five airplanes are engaged efforts to contain the fire, Croatia's Hina news agency reported. The second fire near Sinj damaged 2.5 hectares of oak wood and undergrowth. (index.hr)
