Hungarian Foreign Minister Janos Martonyi expects EU leaders to grant Serbia the EU candidate status in March. He added that Budapest strongly supported Serbia’s efforts in the EU integration process. Hungary expects Serbia to get candidate status The Hungarian minister told daily Vecernje novosti that it was a good thing that the EU General Affairs Council would decide on the issue instead of the Foreign Affairs Council. “I expect the European Council to confirm the ministers’ position afterward,” Martonyi stressed, expressing hope that Belgrade would get good news from Brussels because “practically there is a general support to Serbia to get the candidate status”. He explained that the issue had been discussed several times in Brussels and that messages from the meetings were clear. The Hungarian official added that the issue of restitution and rehabilitation in Vojvodina, which caused concern in Budapest at some point, was now resolved and that Hungary “has become the biggest supporter” Serbia.
