The UN Security Council has yet to set a date for a debate on Kosovo, but Washington agrees with the proposal for UNMIK reconfiguration, say U.S. sources at the UN. The reconfiguration proposal is included within UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s latest report. U.S. agrees with UN reconfiguration The U.S. mission’s deputy spokeswoman Carolyn Vadino told a national agency on Monday night that her country, which is chairing the Security Council in June, had not changed its position on the Kosovo question. “We’re still going over Ban’s report of June 12, but we agree with the appraisal that the UN needs to adjust to the development of the situation, and that after the Kosovo constitution takes effect, UNMIK will not be able to efficiently accomplish the majority of its tasks,“ she said. Vadino added that the U.S. felt that a reconfiguration of the UN presence was necessary in line with a Security Council resolution “in order to preserve stability and the UN’s legacy in Kosovo.“ The U.S., together with Russia, China, the UK and France, are the permanent members of the Security Council, and each has the right to a veto.
