Serbia faces constitutional crisis

Čiplić told Novi Sad daily Dnevnik that he the Constitutional Law chronologically prescribed the order of bills that had to be adopted following the formation of the Parliament and the Government, as well as the obligation to announce local and provincial elections by the end of 2007.

“The timetable set by the Constitutional Law might not be respected, which could lead to the violation of the Law,” Čiplić warned.

He added that there were no sanctions as to the breach of the Constitutional Law, and reminded that Serbia in its recent history violated certain constitutional provisions on several occasions.

Čiplić also said that Serbia had a non-functional Constitutional Court which only added to the constitutional crisis Serbia was facing, for it lacked the competent judicial body to monitor constitutionality and legality.
