Poll: Xenophobia in Hungary on rise

As many as 27 percent of those questioned claiming they would close borders to all asylum seekers, a poll said.

Poll: Xenophobia in Hungary on rise

The number of Hungarians who dislike the Piresians in their country rose to 68 percent in February, from 59 percent in June. However, the report did not specify how many of those interviewed were aware there is no such ethnic group as "Piresians."

Twenty-seven percent of Hungarians would seal borders to all new arrivals regardless of why and from which country they were coming and 67 percent said their decision would depend on nationality of asylum seekers, with ethnic Hungarians from neighboring countries being granted free entry, the Hungarian news agency MTI said, quoting Nepszabadsag.

Arab, Chinese, Romanian and Russian asylum-seekers would be easily rejected based on poll results.Six percent of those queried said Hungary should open borders to asylum seekers, the newspaper said.
