Police in the town of Novi Pazar have arrested a man identified as Elvedin T., suspected of assaulting an elementary school principal. The suspect, who will face charges of attacking an official person while they were performing their duties, has been described as a member of the "first ring of security" for Islamic Community in Serbia leader Mufti Muamer Zukorlic. Mufti's security man assaults school principal Sead Secirovic, who is editor in chief of the Voice of Islam publication, said the suspect was his personal driver, and that he was in the school during the accident without his knowledge. The principal,Ahmedin Djerlek, said that a group of citizens, headed by deputy leader of the Islamic Community in Serbia Resad Plojovic and the International University Rector Melvud Dudic, forced their way into the school's premises. They demanded that two of the teachers from their community should continue to teach religious classes. Djerlek said that a man from the group at one point hit him in the groin. Djerlek also said that Plojovic phoned him beforehand to demand that the teachers be reinstated. "When I told him that as the headmaster, I must respect the Ministry of Education's list of religious teachers, Plojovic said he would show up with the children's parents," said Djerlek. Plojovic told Beta news agency that he was at the school, but said he did not see whether Djerlek was assaulted. Meanwhile, Muamer Zukorlic said his Islamic community - which has a rival in the Islamic Community of Serbia - would not give up on its right to equal Islamic education. He said that his organization will "animate international and domestic public and prove that the right to religious studies equality with other churches and religious communities is not a right determined by the ministers in the Serbian government, who do not have a right to measure on their scales how much right we have." "Our right belongs to us based on the fact we are people, we are citizens of this country and it is formally defined by the Constitution and laws," said he. Zukorlic also announced an assembly of his Islamic community for September 4, that will take its position on "religious teachers and waqf property" issues.
