Regional media consultations are being held in Novi Sad for confirming facts of war crimes committed on the territory of the former Yugoslavia. The consultations were organized by the Vojvodina Association of Independent Journalists, which supports the founding of a regional commission. Media roundtable on war crimes held in Novi Sad Association President Dinko Gruhonjic explained that the goal of the project is the satisfaction of the war crimes victims of the Yugoslav wars. “The initiative dates back to the spring of 2006,” he said, adding that the goal is to have a demand submitted to the governments and parliament of the former Yugoslav republics by 2010 for forming the commission. “Today, 16,000 are registered as missing and more than 130,000 were killed in these conflicts and court justice cannot definitively satisfy the victims,” Gruhonjic said. He reminded that state media in the former Yugoslavia participated in fueling tensions in the conflicts and that they are now expected to promote peace. The initiative is supported by former Croatian ambassador Milan Simurdic, attorney Slobodan Beljanski, historian Slobodan Markovic and publicist Mirko Djordjevic.
