IMF: 2008 growth projected at 4 percent

Serbia will register economic growth of between four and six percent respectively this year and next, predict International Monetary Fund (IMF) experts. In an analysis of European economic trends published today on the IMF’s site, the experts also predict that Croatia will experience slightly greater economic expansion than Serbia this year at 4.3 percent, while in 2009, it will be somewhat lower at just under 4 percent. IMF: 2008 growth projected at 4 percent This year, Montenegro is predicted to register the highest rate of growth in the Western Balkans at 7.2 percent, falling to 5.4 percent next year. Included in the list of measures recommended by the IMF to countries with increasing deficits (such as Serbia) are, above all, activities in the macro-economic field aimed at deepening structural reform, in order to overcome the existing shortfalls as early as possible. Monetary and credit policy in the majority of transitional countries is fairly liberal, says the IMF, and suggests a more stringent monetary policy in certain countries where possible.
