Even though there were minor malfunctions this year, Jat Airways aircrafts have been deemed safe for travel by safety authorities. The last incident occurred in December when a airplane with 36 passengers circled the Belgrade airport for over two hours because of a problem with the pilot control board. However, the national carrier claims that its aircrafts are completely safe. Jat Airways planes deemed safe Every airplane that plans on taking off from Belgrade must first go through technical inspections of the 200,000 parts which make up an airplane. Jat officials say that the entire fllet is kept up to international standards at all times. “This is a very serious job and in every case we are well aware of this. Be certain that every airplane that exits the Jat technical hangar is safe,” Jat chief engineer Radoslav Ilic said. “However, some minor malfunction does occur, but that is effected by the old age of the fleet and the fatigue of the material and personnel,” he said. Jat officials stated that passengers should not worry about the aircrafts being over 20 years old because, regardless, they must fulfill all technical conditions before being allowed to take off. “A little known fact is that in America, a large number of well known companies have much older fleets with average ages of 25 to 30 years,” maintenance chief Vladimir Simic said. “What is important for the passengers is that the plane is well maintained and flown by a well-seasoned pilot – that is what makes passengers safe,” he said. Jat Airways employees believe that it is necessary to get a new fleet in order to meet international standards, however, this question will be left to be considered after the privatization of the carrier is finalized.
