According to the company, the train stopped at 8:38 a.m. after detecting a problem and switching to the ASFA signalling system. It came to a halt in front of a signal that was not displaying any information.

“The driver then, in accordance with established procedures, began communicating with the Traffic Regulation and Control Centre (CRC), operated by Adif, to coordinate the resumption of the journey,” Iryo said.

Ten minutes later, at 8:48 a.m., the Iryo train rear-ended a Renfe train under circumstances that have yet to be clarified.

Initial findings from the investigation suggest that the accident may have been caused by failures in the coordination of rail traffic management along the Madrid–Seville line, at a section designated for trains to pass one another and stop. According to these reports, the Renfe train struck the stationary Iryo train at a speed of more than 100 kilometres per hour.

Sources familiar with the investigation warn that it is too early to draw definitive conclusions, but point to the possibility that several safety systems may have failed. It has not yet been established whether the incident was caused by technical or human error.

One of the key questions is why two trains on the same track received different information, leaving one stationary while the other was travelling at high speed.

The accident site was equipped with the LZB signalling and safety system, which enables continuous communication along the railway line via a dedicated cable installed between the rails. According to El Mundo, the Iryo train driver reported a problem with the LZB system, after which the train came to a stop.

Some Spanish media outlets, including El País and RTVE, previously reported, citing sources within the Spanish government, that the accident may have been caused by human error at the railway traffic control centre.

According to these reports, the Renfe train was allegedly mistakenly cleared to continue its journey despite the Iryo train being on the tracks. However, the circumstances of the accident are still under investigation, and the definitive cause will be determined once the official investigation is complete.
