Horrific train disaster in Spain: At least 46 dead in collision; Chilling footage emerges VIDEO
At least 46 people have been killed in a major train accident that occurred this morning in the province of Toledo, Sky News reported.
Trains operated by Renfe and Iryo collided today on the high-speed railway line between Madrid and Andalusia, forcing the suspension of rail services, infrastructure operator Adif announced.
The accident occurred shortly after 9 a.m. between the towns of Los Yébenes and Urda, in Toledo province, El País reported.
The collision involved a Renfe AVE train traveling from Madrid to Seville and an Iryo train heading in the opposite direction.
El País reported that the high-speed AVE train collided with an Iryo train that was stopped on the tracks, citing emergency services (112), which said that two carriages had plunged down an embankment.
Initial indications suggest that the AVE train may have rear-ended the Iryo train, causing two carriages of the Iryo train to derail.
According to eyewitness reports, medical teams were dispatched to the scene. Both trains derailed and plunged down an embankment.
The Renfe train had previously slowed down and stopped for several minutes due to disruptions to rail traffic.
Renfe, Spain’s state-owned national railway company, reported that rail services between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia had been suspended. The government canceled its schedule of engagements for the day.
