Official confirmation: A "new 9/11" has been thwarted
Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have officially confirmed for the first time that a Flydubai co-pilot, an Omani national, had planned to hijack a plane on a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv and crash it into the passenger terminal at Ben Gurion Airport.
According to a statement by the state prosecutor, the attack was intended to be a suicide mission inspired by the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States.
According to preliminary investigation findings, the plan was to be carried out on September 30.
The suspect intended to take control of the aircraft and use it to attack Israel’s main airport, with the aim of causing as many casualties as possible.
UAE authorities said the suspect had confessed to acting alone, but the state prosecutor stated that the investigation was continuing to determine whether he had any accomplices, CNN reports.
The suspect, identified as Hamam al-Hamami, had previously flown to Tel Aviv twice to study the route and the airport, according to the statement.
Israeli media had reported on the case earlier, but the UAE authorities’ statement was the first official confirmation that the co-pilot had planned to crash the aircraft into the Ben Gurion Airport terminal.
