The attacks came nearly two weeks after fighting began between federal forces and rebel forces, while Ethiopian federal troops captured Mekelle, the capital of Tigray, over the weekend, Reuters reported.

According to a humanitarian bulletin distributed to aid organizations, at least nine people were killed in airstrikes in Adwa, about 100 kilometers northwest of Mekelle, while another eight were killed in Sheraro, in northwestern Tigray. The perpetrators of the attacks were not identified.

The bulletin also said that government forces had engaged in artillery clashes with fighters loyal to the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), the dominant political force in the region and part of a rebel coalition seeking to overthrow Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government.

Spokespeople for Abiy’s office, the federal forces and the TPLF did not respond to requests for comment, and Reuters was unable to independently verify the reports.

The clashes, which have been ongoing since September 23, represent the most serious escalation of violence in Tigray since the 2020–2022 civil war, which claimed hundreds of thousands of lives.

Heavy artillery fire was exchanged this morning between the Ethiopian army and Tigrayan forces near the Tekeze River and the town of Mai Cebri.

Analysts warn that the fighting could develop into a wider conflict, while Ethiopia has accused Eritrea, Sudan and Egypt of supporting the armed opposition. All three countries have denied the allegations.

Ethiopia and Eritrea severed diplomatic relations last week over the allegations.
