France enters the "third act" of protests

At 7 a.m. this morning, students at Tirgo High School in Paris’s 3rd arrondissement placed dumpsters, barriers and banners at the entrance and began blocking access to their school, demanding better learning conditions.

At the request of the school principal, one passage was left open for students in preparatory classes who share the building with the high school students, BFMTV reported from the scene.

CGT Secretary-General Sophie Binet confirmed on TF1 this morning that the union would take part in tomorrow’s nationwide mobilization in support of high school students’ right to protest.

The High School Students’ Union has promised a “third act” of protests on Tuesday, a development that has alarmed the French government, which has warned that the movement is shifting toward “urban violence.”

Sophie Binet confirmed the CGT’s full support for staff and students who have been injured since the beginning of the protests. A day after Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu presented a work plan centered on five key projects, she said the prime minister was “ten days late.”

“The return of peace cannot be ordered from an ivory tower; it is achieved by responding to demands and putting forward proposals,” Binet said, adding that closing high schools when safety conditions have not been met is the wrong approach.

She proposes introducing a “day off from classes” to allow high school students to collectively discuss and decide on courses of action at their schools and other safe locations.

Due to the mobilization of high school students in Reims, public transportation in the northeastern French city is expected to face major disruptions today.

Fire at another high school

Around 100 students were evacuated today from Vauquelin High School in Paris’s 13th arrondissement after demonstrators gathered outside the school allegedly started a fire.

“Staff rushed in with fire extinguishers before firefighters and police arrived,” BFMTV’s reporting team, which was inside the school when the fire was started, reported.

As firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze, demonstrators attacked them with pyrotechnic devices. Several minutes after the fire was put out and the school evacuated, Jean-Didier Berger, a French Interior Ministry secretary of state, condemned the “very shocking incidents.”

“These are criminal acts that must be dealt with in the strictest possible manner,” Berger said.

Paris education authorities also condemned this morning’s attempts to start fires at the entrance to Vauquelin High School.
