German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul revealed details of his talks with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, marking their first such conversation in four years.

Given the tensions between the West and Moscow, the meeting between the two officials came as a surprise to many. Wadephul shared details of his conversation with Lavrov, as well as the reasons for the meeting itself, with German public broadcaster ARD.

“The key reason was the recent use of armed drones at the airport in Leipzig. Fortunately, nothing serious happened. Nevertheless, a certain line was crossed. I wanted to make it clear that Germany will stand firm in its position and defend itself,” the German politician said.

However, he noted that their positions on current issues had not moved any closer.

“Fundamental differences in their assessments of the war became apparent. The conversation was very difficult and very frank. Nevertheless, I believe it is right that we talk to one another,” he said.

In addition to the drone incidents, the talks also covered grain exports. Developing countries and emerging economies from the so-called Global South had asked Wadephul to speak with Russia. They were no longer receiving grain shipments from Russia or Ukraine, and the Global South now faces the threat of hunger. A ceasefire in the Black Sea region is necessary for exports to resume.

Wadephul said that maintaining diplomatic silence following the Russian attack on Ukraine had been the right course of action.

However, the time has now come to resume dialogue. Negotiations with Russia should not be left exclusively to the United States. Germany and Europe have their own interests. Nevertheless, there is still no reason to return to business as usual.

Unusual detail during the meeting

An unusual detail marked the meeting, according to the German newspaper Welt. When Wadephul sat down opposite his Russian counterpart, he found a document in front of him in which Moscow sought to dispute the responsibility of Russian forces for the massacre of civilians in the Ukrainian city of Bucha.

The document was titled “Goebbels’ Successors: Falsification of the Events in Bucha and the Kyiv Regime’s Bloody Fabrications.” The Russian side placed it on the table in the room used by its delegation at the UN headquarters in New York.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova later released footage of the meeting, claiming that Wadephul covered the document with his notebook and “pretended not to notice it.”

 

The document reiterates Russia’s long-standing claim that the scenes of civilians killed, discovered after Russian forces withdrew from Bucha in spring 2022, were a Ukrainian fabrication. No credible evidence has been found to substantiate this claim, while findings by international investigators point to the contrary.
