Germany furious; New sabotage suspected PHOTO
German investigators are examining suspicious material believed to be potentially explosive, which was found several meters from a crashed drone near Wunstorf Air Base in Lower Saxony.
Authorities are also investigating a possible connection between this case and an alleged sabotage attempt at Leipzig/Halle Airport in August.
According to local media reports, a farmer found a drone, broken into several pieces, near Wunstorf Air Base about a week earlier.
Authorities later discovered suspicious material just a few meters from where the drone was found. Security officials believe it could be explosive, although forensic analysis of the material has not yet been completed.
Investigators are looking into whether there is a connection between the drone found near Wunstorf and the [Leipzig case], but no such link has been confirmed so far.
Drone reportedly similar to those involved in the Leipzig case
According to media reports, the device was built in a similar way to the drones involved in the Leipzig case, with at least one of its components having been manufactured using a 3D printer.
Investigators also believe that the drone may have been near the airport for an extended period, possibly for as long as two years.
Wunstorf is the home base of the German Bundeswehr’s A400M transport aircraft fleet and is considered an important hub for supplying Germany’s armed forces with personnel and equipment around the world.
Germany has blamed Russia for the incident in Leipzig, in which, according to investigators, the attackers allegedly attempted to destroy Ukrainian cargo aircraft.
Similar incident already reported near Hanover
This is not the first time that the discovery of a drone has prompted investigators to examine a possible connection to the Leipzig case.
In mid-August, a drone led to multiple runway and airspace closures at Hanover-Langenhagen Airport. Police subsequently launched a separate investigation into a possible connection with the Leipzig case.
