Migrant chaos shakes Europe; Far right gains strength

Images of migrants crossing into the Spanish North African enclave of Ceuta have fueled support for far-right parties in the European Union, EU Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner said today.

“We have lower numbers, but the images from Ceuta obviously overshadow the real achievements and the actual facts and figures,” Brunner told Reuters in an interview.

He said that this is why it is “so important to return these people as soon as possible,” so that the EU, of which Spain is a member, can “show that it is in control.”

Speaking about European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s proposal to adopt an emergency framework to prevent large-scale organized movements of migrants, Brunner said the details would be discussed at the next meeting of the EU Council of Member States.

“First and foremost, we need to implement the system we have already agreed on,” Brunner added.

Of the more than 72,000 migrants who entered Ceuta from Morocco late yesterday, most left the city over the following few days, while Spain estimates that around 12,000 migrants remain in Ceuta, including minors.
