Strong earthquake: People injured; Railway traffic suspended VIDEO
A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Japan today, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to Japanese media reports, several people have been injured.
JR Kyushu said that no abnormalities were detected at the Genkai nuclear power plant in Saga Prefecture and the Sendai nuclear power plant in Kagoshima Prefecture.
It was also reported that radiation levels around monitoring stations had not changed.
The U.S. Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) announced that the tsunami threat following the earthquake had passed and that there was no longer any tsunami danger for Japan's coastline.
According to eyewitness accounts published on the EMSC website, shaking was felt for several seconds.
