Mykhailo Drapatyi is a new Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces PHOTO
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Mykhailo Drapatyi, the former commander of the Joint Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, has been appointed the new Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian military.
"Ukraine's new Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces will be Mykhailo Drapatyi," Zelensky's Telegram channel announced.
Zelensky added that the composition of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces will also be renewed soon.
Who is Mykhailo Vasylovych Drapatyi?
Mykhailo Vasylovych Drapatyi was born on November 21, 1982. He is a Ukrainian military officer who served as commander of the Joint Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from June 3, 2025. From 2024 to 2025, he was commander of the Ukrainian Ground Forces.
On July 21, 2026, he became Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, replacing Oleksandr Syrskyi.
Alongside his current role, Drapatyi has held several important command positions, including commander of the 2nd Battalion of the 72nd Mechanized Brigade during the Battle of Mariupol in 2014, as well as during the missile strike near Zelenopillya and the subsequent breakout from encirclement.
He also served as chief of staff and first deputy commander of the 30th Mechanized Brigade, commander of the 58th Motorized Infantry Brigade, as well as commander of several operational-strategic and operational-tactical groups.
He has received numerous high military honors, including the full Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, the Cross of Military Merit, and the title of Hero of Ukraine.
