Horrifying figures; Nearly 5,000 dead, more than 16,000 injured

The death toll from the two earthquakes that struck Venezuela at the end of June has risen to 4,930, while more than 20,000 people have been placed in temporary shelters, authorities said today.

According to data published by National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez on Telegram, 16,740 people were injured in the earthquakes, while 6,462 people were rescued.

Authorities said that 17,907 people were left homeless, while 21,210 people have been accommodated in 107 temporary shelters.

The earthquakes damaged 856 buildings, 190 of which completely collapsed.

More than 65,000 people are involved in relief and recovery efforts, including foreign rescuers, state emergency personnel and volunteers.

Venezuela was hit by two earthquakes on June 24, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, which occurred 39 seconds apart.

Following the disaster, authorities declared a state of emergency, while the international community provided rescue and humanitarian aid.
