Number of Ebola cases could be four times higher than official figures: New data released

The actual number of Ebola cases in Congo is at least twice, and possibly four times, higher than the official figure, said today Chikwe Ihekweazu, executive director of the World Health Organization’s Health Emergencies Programme.

"We estimate that, based on our analysis and mathematical models, the actual scale of the Ebola outbreak is at least two to four times larger than the number of officially confirmed cases," Ihekweazu said at a press conference in Geneva, Reuters reported.

According to the latest data, the number of confirmed Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo has risen to 1,873, including 672 deaths.

 

A clinical trial of two experimental treatments against the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus is underway in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo, as part of an international project involving universities, pharmaceutical companies, and the World Health Organization (WHO). Experts hope the new therapies will reduce mortality among patients after showing promising results in animal studies.

The trial is using the antiviral drug remdesivir, which is already in use, and the experimental treatment MBP134, which contains proteins capable of recognizing and neutralizing the virus.
