Over two million casualties?

Russia has lost around 450,000 soldiers in the war against Ukraine, while total number of casualties — including those killed, wounded, and missing on both sides — exceeds two million, according to a new study by the U.S. think tank CSIS.

According to estimates by Center for Strategic and International Studies CSIS, Russia has suffered around 1.4 million casualties, which represents roughly one percent of the country’s total population.

The losses have not been evenly distributed, with poorer regions and ethnic minorities being disproportionately affected.

Russian opposition media increasingly report stories from small villages where almost all the men have been killed.

The report’s authors, Seth G. Jones and Riley McCabe, noted that Russian losses in the war in Ukraine are more than four times higher than total U.S. military casualties in all wars since World War II, and more than nine times higher than all Soviet and Russian losses in conflicts since 1945.

Ukraine, according to the same estimates, has suffered between 525,000 and 625,000 casualties, including between 125,000 and 150,000 killed.

“These figures are staggering,” the authors of the report said.

“Russian deaths in Ukraine are more than four times higher than all U.S. deaths in all wars combined since World War II, and more than nine times higher than all Soviet and Russian deaths in all wars since 1945,” the authors stated.

Neither Russia nor Ukraine releases official casualty figures, but the latest CSIS data broadly aligns with Western estimates.

Seth G. Jones and Riley McCabe noted that, in terms of casualties, the war is becoming significantly more costly for Russia than for Ukraine, adding that the casualty ratio likely rose to nearly eight to one in the first half of this year — meaning that for every Ukrainian soldier killed, wounded, or missing, there are about eight Russian casualties, according to reports cited by CNN and republished by Večernji list.

They also added that this situation is a result of Kyiv’s advances in its drone program, particularly its ability to significantly expand the so-called “kill zone” — an area around the front lines so saturated with drones that Russian troop movements are extremely difficult.

“Ukraine’s deep defense strategy has been effective in killing and wounding Russian soldiers, as well as limiting Russian maneuver,” they stated.

They further noted that Russian losses are also driven by poor tactics, a lack of coordinated operations, corruption, and low morale.
