The eastbound lanes of the Interstate 70 in Clear Creek County, about 80 kilometers west of Denver, have been closed, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Emergency teams examined 19 people, and eight were taken to hospital, including one person who, according to authorities, sustained serious injuries.

Speaking to CBS Colorado, witness Emily Medina said the crashes happened immediately after exiting a tunnel.

“I was coming out of the tunnel and everything was completely dark. It was snowing heavily. I think I was one of the last people involved in that chain-reaction crash. In the end, another truck came onto the road and there were additional collisions, and people were injured,” Medina said.
