A 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Indonesia early this morning, and one person was killed in the tremor, local authorities reported.

The Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) issued a tsunami warning following the strong 7.6-magnitude earthquake that struck the Maluku Sea region in eastern Indonesia this morning, but later lifted it after monitoring showed no significant changes in sea levels, Xinhua reported.

The victim, a 70-year-old resident of North Sulawesi, died when a building collapsed during the earthquake, the local search and rescue team in Manado, the capital of North Sulawesi, said.

The National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) reported that a strong earthquake struck the waters southeast of the city of Bitung, North Sulawesi.

 

A very strong tremor was felt for 10 to 20 seconds in Bitung and the surrounding areas.

The BNPB reported that several dozen aftershocks have been recorded, the strongest of which had a magnitude of 6.2 with its epicenter at sea, adding that preliminary data indicate minor to moderate damage from these quakes.
