Peskov declared: The Arctic is ours

“That is our region. We are an Arctic country, unlike the vast majority of European Union countries. We are open to cooperation and joint action,” Peskov told reporters.

If the European Union’s policy is aimed at cooperation in the Arctic, Russia will welcome it.

“If EU representatives have in mind a new policy focused on international cooperation, that can be welcomed. However, if they are thinking of confrontation, which is currently very fashionable in Brussels, then, of course, we can hardly welcome that, and it will hardly have any positive effect,” Peskov said.

According to him, Russia has significant interests in the Arctic and will defend them, using the full arsenal of international law.

Earlier, Kaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, stated at a conference in Norway that the European Union needs a new security policy in the Arctic.
