Blockade and state of emergency: Entering complete isolation
Yemen has declared a state of emergency and canceled a security pact with the United Arab Emirates after separatists backed by Abu Dhabi seized parts of its territory.
“The joint defense agreement with the United Arab Emirates is hereby annulled,” the statement from Yemen said.
A separate decree also announces a state of emergency lasting 90 days, including a 72-hour air, sea, and land blockade.
The announcements by Rashad al-Alimi, head of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, come after the Saudi-led coalition fighting in the divided country said it had struck a weapons shipment from the UAE intended for separatists.
Forces of the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) advanced across southern Yemen this month, seizing most of the resource-rich Hadramout province and parts of the neighboring Al Mahrah province.
The conflict risks the collapse of Yemen’s already fragmented government, which is made up of various factions backed by the oil-rich Gulf powers Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
It also threatens to derail slow-moving peace talks with the Iran-backed Houthi rebels, who overthrew the government in the capital Sanaa in 2014, triggering military intervention by the Saudi-led coalition.
