Trump Is playing a dangerous game: His actions could lead to catastrophic consequences – even for America
Current political attacks on the European Union may serve short-term domestic cultural and ideological battles, but in the long run, they would lead to serious security and political consequences.
Recently, within a segment of the American political spectrum, particularly close to President Donald Trump’s administration, calls to weaken or even dismantle the European Union have become increasingly frequent. The EU is described as a bureaucratic project allegedly destroying the national identity and sovereignty of European states. However, as a Politico analysis warns, such views ignore the historical and political consequences that the disappearance of the European Union would have for Europe—and for the United States itself.
According to this analysis, Europe without the European Union would not become a stable continent of strong, sovereign nation-states; rather, it could turn into a space for the revival of old territorial disputes and national conflicts.
The author emphasizes that European integration is a key mechanism that today prevents the resurgence of territorial revisionism and nationalist projects. The text cites examples of political actors in Europe who openly pursue historical or ethnic claims against neighboring countries, but such ideas have so far remained politically constrained thanks to the European framework. Without the EU, Politico warns, these ambitions could become a real threat to peace.
The analysis also emphasizes that weakening the European Union would empower external actors like Russia, which already exploits “frozen conflicts” and political instability to expand its influence. At the same time, undermining the European security architecture would weaken NATO, with direct consequences for American interests. Politico reminds that U.S. support for European integration after World War II was not an expression of idealism, but a strategic decision aimed at preventing new wars in Europe. According to the author, this policy has delivered decades of peace, economic growth, and a stable transatlantic partnership—benefits that have also accrued to the United States.
The analysis warns that current political attacks on the European Union may serve short-term domestic cultural and ideological battles, but in the long term, they would lead to serious security and political consequences. The collapse of the EU would not be a problem only for Europe—it would quickly prove to be a strategic mistake for the United States as well.
