Escalation: troops are massing, war at the doorstep

The United States moved a large contingent of special operations aircraft and several cargo planes transporting troops and equipment to the Caribbean region this week, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported today, citing unnamed U.S. officials.

U.S. President Donald Trump said last week that he does not rule out the possibility of war with Venezuela, after ordering a blockade of sanctioned oil tankers arriving in and departing from Venezuela, thereby increasing pressure on that country’s president, Nicolás Maduro.

Trump, however, declined to say whether removing Maduro from power is his ultimate goal.

“He knows exactly what I want. He knows it better than anyone,” Trump said, referring to the president of Venezuela.

Trump reiterated the threat of ground attacks and said it would be “smart” for Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to step down.

“There is no response. He can do whatever he wants. We have a massive armada—the largest we have ever had, and the largest we have ever had in South America. He can do whatever he wants. It’s fine, whatever he wants to do. If he wants to do something, if he plays rough, it will be the last time he is ever able to play rough,” Trump said.

As part of U.S. military operations, 28 ships off the country’s coast have already been hit, and over 100 people have been killed in the attacks, with the U.S. Department of Defense repeatedly stating that the targeted ships were transporting drugs destined for the United States.

According to Pentagon data, since September the U.S. has carried out more than twenty attacks on alleged drug trafficking ships in the Pacific and Caribbean, resulting in the deaths of over 100 people.
