A NATO country has declared a state of emergency
Lithuania has declared a state of emergency due to a threat to public safety posed by smuggling balloons originating from Belarus, the government announced today.
Lithuania claims that Belarus is allowing smugglers to use weather balloons to traffic cigarettes across the border, which has repeatedly forced Vilnius airport to suspend operations and disrupted air traffic, Reuters reported.
The duration of the emergency measures has not yet been specified.
Belarus has denied responsibility for the incidents and accused Lithuania of provocations, including allegedly sending a drone with “extremist” material, while Lithuania dismissed these claims as unfounded.
Lithuania is a member of NATO and the European Union, and was previously part of the Soviet Union.
