Is Macron's impeachment being prepared? "The countdown has begun"
The leader of the France Unbowed party (LFI), Jean-Luc Mélenchon, has called for an immediate consideration of a motion to impeach President Emmanuel Macron following the resignation of Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu.
“Following Lecornu’s resignation, we call for the immediate consideration of the proposal submitted by 104 members of parliament to remove Emmanuel Macron from office,” read Mélenchon’s post on the X platform.
The head of the France Unbowed (La France Insoumise LFI) parliamentary group, Mathilde Panot, declared that “the countdown has begun” and called on Macron to step down, BFM TV reported. “Three prime ministers defeated in less than a year,” Panot wrote following Lecornu’s resignation.
The president of the far-right National Rally party, Jordan Bardella, urged the French president to dissolve parliament.
“The short-lived prime minister likely had no room to maneuver,” Bardella said in response to Lecornu’s resignation.
Earlier today, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu submitted his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron, who accepted it, the Élysée Palace announced.
Lecornu, who was appointed Prime Minister of France on September 9, became the shortest-serving prime minister in the country’s history with his resignation after just 27 days in office, BFM reported.
The resignation came less than 24 hours after the presentation of the first phase of the new government, which mostly included former ministers and close associates of President Macron.
