Today, Macron met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, to whom he told that reaching an agreement on Tehran's nuclear program is still possible in order to avoid the return of international sanctions to that country, but that there are "only a few more hours" left for that.

"It is up to Iran to fulfill the legitimate conditions we have set," Macron wrote on the X platform.

He enumerated a list of demands on which there is no compromise with European countries, namely full access to all sites in Iran for inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), transparency regarding stockpiles of enriched uranium and the immediate continuation of negotiations.

"Our position is clear, Iran must never get nuclear weapons," Macron pointed out, recalling that, since Tehran did not fulfill its obligations under the nuclear agreement, France, Germany and Great Britain activated the procedure in the UN Security Council, which enables the re-introduction of sanctions.

On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, last-ditch efforts are underway to reach an agreement to control Iran's nuclear program and avoid the reinstatement of UN sanctions that would take effect at midnight on Saturday.

Ahead of the meeting with the Iranian president, Macron told French media that a "final gesture" by Iran was needed to avoid the return of sanctions. Pezeshkian, in his speech at the UN, insisted today that his country does not want to develop nuclear weapons, rejecting Western accusations.
