Terrible: 400,000 and it's not over
About 400,000 Palestinians have so far been evacuated from Gaza City to other parts of the Strip, according to a new estimate by the Israeli military (IDF).
An estimated one million Palestinians lived in Gaza City before the IDF began preparing for a major offensive against Hamas in the area, The Times of Israel reports.
Before the offensive, the IDF ordered Palestinians in all parts of Gaza City to immediately evacuate to the Israeli-designated humanitarian zone in the south of the Strip.
In recent days, the pace of evacuations has increased to tens of thousands of people per day, according to the Israeli military, whose estimates are generally higher than those given by the United Nations, according to the Israeli portal.
Due to the increasing number of evacuees blocking the Rashid coastal road, the army announced this morning that it will open a second evacuation route, on Salah al-Din - Gaza's main north-south highway - from noon today to noon Friday local time.
